Youth Soccer Tryout Evaluation Checklist

A practical checklist for scoring youth soccer players fairly during tryouts — from check-in and stations to final placement decisions.

Before the first whistle

Print or share one checklist every evaluator will use: player roster, station map, criteria definitions, and the 1–10 scoring scale. Confirm age groups, field layout, and who owns check-in so scoring does not start late.

Online registration and QR check-in get kids onto the roster before stations open. Cap capacity when you do not have enough evaluators to score every player the same way.

Score the same stations for every player

Walk the checklist in order: warmup observation, technical station, athletic or speed work, then small-sided play. Score first touch, passing, dribbling, soccer IQ, work rate, and athleticism for field players; keep a separate goalkeeper block.

Assign one evaluator (or tablet) per station and rotate on a timer. PIN-login stations keep volunteer handoffs clean so scores do not live on lost clipboards.

Calibrate mid-session, not after placement

After the first wave, pause and compare a few shared scores. If one station averages 8s and another 4s on the same kids, reset the scale before the next group — not during final cuts.

Mark incomplete players on the checklist so nobody is ranked from half a session. A coach dashboard that shows who still needs scores prevents quiet gaps from becoming unfair placement fights.

Close with placement you can explain

Use composite scores and position needs for a first draft of teams, then coach-adjust for siblings, chemistry, and club policy. Keep short placement notes tied to criteria so parent conversations stay evidence-based.

Archive the completed checklist with the season roster. Reusing the same tryout evaluation structure next year makes year-over-year comparisons honest instead of reinvented.
