Build one sheet every evaluator can share
A soccer tryout scoring sheet only helps when every station uses the same layout. Put player number, name or initials, preferred position, and a short note column on every row. Keep the criteria list short enough that volunteer evaluators can finish a group before the next rotation starts.
Define the scale once at the top of the sheet: what a 4, 6, and 8 look like for first touch, passing, dribbling, soccer IQ, work rate, and athleticism. Shared definitions stop one station from living in the 8s while another stays in the 4s.
Match columns to stations, not to memory
Give each station its own scoring block so ratings stay tied to what that evaluator actually saw. Technical, athletic, and small-sided game stations should not collapse into one gut score after the session ends.
If you use tablets or PIN-login station evaluators, mirror the paper sheet fields in the digital form. Coaches comparing clipboard and screen scores need the same columns, or the composite ranking becomes noise.
Capture notes that survive placement week
Leave two lines for evidence, not essays: one strength, one growth area, plus a flag for incomplete scores. Notes like "strong first touch under pressure" travel better into parent conversations than a lonely number.
Mark goalkeepers on a separate block so outfield criteria do not punish them. When results are close, those short notes and position tags often decide fair placement more cleanly than raw averages alone.
Roll scores into teams you can explain
After the last station, average complete sheets by criteria and review outliers with the coaching group. Use the composite view for a first team draft, then adjust for siblings, chemistry, and club policy.
Archive the scoring sheets with the season roster. Reusing the same template next year makes year-over-year comparisons honest, and parent-ready summaries stay tied to criteria families already saw on the tryout page.
